Bill Emerson, the De Soto Republican who mounted a high-spending campaign aimed at U.S. Rep. Bill D. Burlison's record in Congress, unseated the longtime Democrat Tuesday in a victory many thought could never be pulled off in the predominantly Democratic 10th Congressional District.
Cape Girardeau County voters mirrored those nationally in their choice for president yesterday; Ronald Reagan won in a landslide both nationally and locally by a margin of 2-to-1 over Jimmy Carter; but the Republican sweep nationwide wasn't seen in local county races.
Ferdinand Jaco, 63, of Oak Ridge was fatally injured yesterday when the trunk of a tree which was being felled struck him; he sustained a head injury, fractures of both legs and one arm, and died at a Cape Girardeau hospital this morning.
A native stone marker at the entrance to Arena Park was dedicated in brief ceremonies to George and Fred Naeter yesterday, a testimonial to their 50 years of achievement as founders and publishers of the Southeast Missourian; the marker was the gift of a number of friends and associates.
