Acting on tip, Cape Girardeau Police Department yesterday arrested three men suspected in drug-related killings of Sherry Scheper and her sons, Curtis Scheper and Randy Scheper, on Aug. 9; arrested were: John G. Browne Jr., 21, Gary Lee Roll, 40, and David W. Rhodes, 18.

Jackson -- Voters in Cape Girardeau County rolled out in record numbers Tuesday, smashing turnout record set eight years ago; 28,886 county voters were 3,584 more than record number that turned out in 1984, when Ronald Reagan won second term in White House and John Ashcroft captured his first term as governor; not only was election record turnout in actual numbers, it also was percentage-wise, with 82 percent of county's 35,165 registered voters casting ballots.

Ninth annual Heritage Ball is held at Holiday Racquet Club; theme for ball, which is fund raiser for Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau and its efforts to restore the Glenn House, 325 S. Spanish, is "Golden Era of Railroads."

Lake Wappapello -- Continuous monitoring devices to measure soundness of Lake Wappapello Dam are being installed by Army Corps of Engineers; about 16 or 20 of devices called "piesometers" are being installed; they measure pressure and detect water levels and seepage; they will give advance warning of any problem, according to corps.

50 years ago: Nov. 5, 1952

Cape Girardeau County electors gave Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower smashing margin and racked up string of majorities for state and local Republican candidates Tuesday in overwhelming return to party they deserted four years ago to vote Democratic; on entire ballot, which listed total of 20 offices to be filled, Republicans had margin in all but four contests.

Commissioner Philip H. Steck, describing number of small children as well as larger ones who are on city streets at night, is asking city council to pass curfew law requiring them to be home by 10 p.m.; he says children are on streets late at night without any supervision, and frequently cause difficulty for police officers.

75 years ago: Nov. 5, 1927

Dozen business men of Cape Girardeau get together in morning and decide to issue call for mass meeting Monday of all residents to determine what shall be done about Missouri Pacific Railroad problem; it is explained that it has become plainly apparent that if Cape Girardeau wants second railroad, it will be necessary to raise fund of $60,000 to get it; that money would be used to purchase right of way for road; earlier drive to collect that amount failed.

Much enthusiasm was shown in fox hunt last night, held by Cape Girardeau County Fox Hunters Association from its camp 10 miles northwest of Cape Girardeau, despite fact that chase lasted only three hours, the fox getting tired of fun and withdrawing to his den; it is reported that dogs belonging to Otis Windenect again placed highest in scoring.
