In night when Democrats were winning from White House to state house, U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson celebrated Republican victory Tuesday, handily winning re-election to seventh term; Cape Girardeau Republican won in all 26 counties in 8th District, defeating Democratic challenger Thad Bullock of Cape Girardeau and write-in candidate Harold Reed of Glen Allen.
Citizen-backed initiative that started this summer culminated yesterday with Cape Girardeau voters approving by two-thirds margin a switch to zone representation on city council; ballot initiative will amend City Charter and scrape at-large council elections.

Employees at Cape Girardeau's two Florsheim Shoe Co. factories and factory in Chaffee return to work in morning following talks late yesterday and early today between union local officials and key rank-and-file members supporting strike; unauthorized strike began Monday.
Clarence E. Shirrell, Cape Girardeau business man and long-time member of Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee, is recipient of committee's 18th Annual Friend of Agriculture Award; Shirrell is owner of Cape Ready Mix.

City council Monday ordered ordinance drafted placing four city officers under $25 monthly expense allowances; under proposed ordinance, police chief, fire chief, fire master mechanic and city assessor will be allowed $25 monthly for gasoline and oil expenses in their own automobiles.
Robert M. Harrison of Benton, graduate engineer with experience on State Highway Department, in construction work and in Army, was employed by city council yesterday as city engineer, effective Dec. 1 and as assistant engineer until that date; one-month period as assistant allows him to work under City Engineer E.L. Sailer until he becomes familiar with projects now under way or contemplated.
75 years ago: Nov. 4, 1927
Fire of undetermined origin early in morning guts interior of apartment house at 125 S. Lorimier, causing damage estimated in excess of $10,000; fire at house, owned by Russell R. Deal, is discovered shortly after 1 a.m. by Mrs. James Catavious, who lives in home in rear of apartment, and who turns in alarm.
Twenty-four dogs participated in first fox hunt conducted last evening under auspices of Cape Girardeau County Fox Hunters Association; hunt was staged in hills surrounding association's camp, 10 miles north of Cape Girardeau on Greens Ferry Road; results of chase will be judged on three night's participation and only part scores were made on first hunt.
