Faced with burden of complying with state and federal solid-waste management mandates, city officials are studying how much trash fees in Cape Girardeau will increase next year; new landfill regulations will mean higher waste-hauling and disposal costs; also, closure of city's filled landfill will cost $600,000 next year and $50,000 annually for monitoring site.
After years of discussion and planning, countywide 911 emergency telephone service went on line yesterday morning in Cape Girardeau County.

Races for three administrative posts in Cape Girardeau County government -- circuit clerk, county clerk and recorder of deeds -- have attracted varying public interest; vying for county clerk post are Rodney Miller and Robert F. Ludwig; candidates for circuit clerk are incumbent Charles Hutson and Robert Bartlett; Roger Ellis and incumbent Janet Robert are campaigning for recorder's post.
Dr. Robert C. Briner, director of Southeast Missouri Regional Crime Laboratory, has been elected member of Board of Directors of American Society of Crime Lab Directors.
50 years ago: Nov. 3, 1953
Missouri's two senators and 10th District representative have joined The Missourian in asking post office department to announce its plans for use of Courthouse Park as site for new post office when it is built; old courthouse is rapidly falling into disrepair and, unless attention is paid to it, building won't be usable for much longer.
Wayne Rust and Elmer Shrout have purchased building at 43 S. Main from Floyd L. Statler; latter will continue to use building for his Studebaker car agency.
75 years ago: Nov. 3, 1928
Prospects for record vote in Cape Girardeau next Tuesday are very impressive, especially if weather conditions are favorable; largest number of voters in history have registered in Cape Girardeau to be eligible to vote, and if these more than 6,800 voters cast ballots, it will exceed by over 2,000 number cast in last presidential election.
Herman Bock of near Allenville brought to Jackson yesterday giant bob cat which he killed night before in woods in lower end of county while out hunting; this is largest specimen of this particular species of wild cat, variously known as catamount, bay lynx or lynx ruffus, seen here in years.
