Calendar reads Nov. 7, but thermometer reports mid-winter temperatures; 10 p.m. reading at Municipal Airport is chilly 22 degrees; temperatures in Missouri and much of Midwest plunge to lows not normally seen until January; dome of extremely cold air has pushed deep into midsection of nation.
City Council Monday night will hold public hearing on request for special use permit for drug and alcohol treatment facility on corner of Linden and West End Boulevard; city's Planning and Zoning Commission has recommended council approve center's permit, which would be across street from former WISER Inc. building, similar facility that closed last year.

Tenth District U.S. Rep. Bill D. Burlison, D-Cape Girardeau, experienced little difficulty yesterday in winning reelection to fifth two-year term; Burlison warded off all attempts by Dr. Joe Carron of Arnold to unseat popular representative.
Cape Girardeau County voters Tuesday followed state trend in approving constitutional amendment to earmark funds for conservation and proposition barring utilities from passing construction costs on to customers; rejected, as it was statewide, was amendment which would have eliminated sales tax on food and drugs.

Temperature slipped to mid-winter 16 degrees during night, and there are indications in forecast that while moderation is expected shortly, it won't come until after another reading in same low range tonight; first ice of season appears on lagoon at Capaha Park.
Those towers in north Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties that have been puzzle to many people past few months are part of microwave telephone system for Texas-Illinois Pipeline Co.; they provide communication for pipeline company and aren't part of regular telephone company installations.

Despite support for Proposition No. 4 in St. Louis and Kansas City, measure, which would have repealed state prohibition laws, was defeated in yesterday's election; in Cape Girardeau County, vote was 5,644 against proposition and 2,479 for it.
Swept to victory on big majority given them in Cape Girardeau city, four Democratic candidates for county offices won over Republican opponents in one of closest elections in this county in years; so close was finish that in some cases official count will be required to determine actual results; carrying seven of 10 precincts in Cape Girardeau, S.P. Dalton appears to have defeated Republican J. Grant Frye by 40 votes for county prosecuting attorney; in another close race, Democrat Charles Macke of Jackson was elected clerk of circuit court over incumbent Charles Jaeger.- Sharon K. Sanders
