A committee of parents, teachers and educators met yesterday to begin a study of the best method of educating sixth-graders in Cape Girardeau; the Schultz Feasibility Study is examining the feasibility and desirability of a middle-school concept combining sixth- and seventh-grade students.
A one-year contract with Cape County Private Ambulance Inc. to continue providing ambulance services to the county has been unanimously approved by the Cape Girardeau County Commission.
A city tax levy to help finance the operation and maintenance of the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport may be proposed by the city Airport Board to accompany the anticipated runway bond issue; such a levy was considered last winter and has been revived.
The financial report for the 1963 SEMO District Fair, Sept. 9 through 15, shows the event was a definite success; total income was $63,606; expenses added up to $60,094, leaving a profit of $3,512.
A spectacular downtown fire late last night destroyed the 31-year-old, four-story Elks Building on lower Themis Street, leaving only smoking embers of what two decades ago was a center of Cape Girardeau social affairs; also gutted and virtually destroyed was the adjoining two-story brick residence owned and operated for many years by Mrs. Ollie "Ma" Kopper as a combination rooming and boardinghouse.
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Mrs. O.E. Rigdon of Chaffee, vice chairman of the Missouri Democratic State Committee, has been invited to a luncheon at the White House as the guest of the first lady on Dec. 6.
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- T.M. Jackson, the city marshal, has tendered his resignation, and it was accepted by the city council; the mayor appointed J.M. Hamilton to serve in that position until the next meeting of the council; Hamilton has had three years' experience as a policeman in Chaffee.
"Fra Diavolo," a comic opera in three acts, will be presented by the famous Boston Ideal Opera Company at the Broadway Opera House on Tuesday.
