The congregation of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson observes its 25th anniversary of dedication; speaking at the worship services is a former pastor, the Rev. Earl Weis; he is retired and living in Fairfield Bay, Ark.; an anniversary concert by the Adult Choir, St. Paul Singers and three handbell choirs is held in the afternoon.

Dr. John E. Owen, pastor of First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, has been named a trustee at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.

1962

Dr. Mark F. Scully, president of State College, this week presented Gov. John M. Dalton the college's requests for capital outlay and other needs for incorporation in the governor's forthcoming budget; included in the needs for the college are an addition to Kent Library, a new classroom building, an addition to the power plant and necessary extensions to buildings.

Jim Rust, 190-pound senior center for this year's undefeated Cape Girardeau Central High football team, has been named the Outstanding Lineman of the North Division of the Southeast Missouri Activities Association.

1937

Construction begins on Santa Claus' igloo at Courthouse Park to have it ready for the big man's first visit here Saturday; the igloo will resemble those used by Eskimos at the North Pole; it's being built just north of the bandstand.

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Options have been obtained for the 1,000 acres in Mississippi County for the proposed state park to be established around the "Big Oak"; this is regarded as an important step in the preservation of the oak, since five pledges of gift land, totaling 490 acres, hinge on the full 1,000 acres being acquired.

1912

A report is current that negotiations have been about completed in New York for the sale of the Houck lines from Jackson to Ancell to an important railroad seeking entrance into Cape Girardeau, and which also desires the Thebes, Ill., bridge connection with the Illinois coal fields.

At the corner of Middle Street and Broadway, Messrs. Caruthers and Houser have opened up the Pure Food Grocery, having bought the Kage stand.
