25 years ago: Nov. 29, 1979

Storing shotguns and rifles in gun racks in the back windows of pickup trucks may be convenient for hunters, but it's also a temptation for gun thieves; Cape Girardeau police report that about a dozen pickups have been broken into in the past few weeks, and guns on the racks inside stolen.

A fire at Pioneer Orchards in Jackson Saturday morning destroyed a metal warehouse and between 4,500 and 6,000 bushels of apples stored inside; Stanley Beggs, owner, estimates the total damage at around $500,000.

50 years ago: Nov. 29, 1954

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Dr. L.W. Feltz, his wife and their seven children leave for a trip to Australia; it will be a Christmas celebration and homecoming there; Mrs. Feltz is from Townsville, Australia, and was the former Irene L. Creedon; she met her husband while he was in military service, being a captain and on duty as a medical officer.

The largest crowd ever to see a parade in Cape Girar-deau packs the streets in the evening for the annual Salute to Santa Claus Parade sponsored by the Retail Merchants Association; police estimate the crowd at between 12,000 and 15,000.

75 years ago: Nov. 29, 1929

Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri are in the grip of the most severe cold wave of the season; the temperature dropped to 10 degrees above zero, 10 degrees lower than the previous low mark recorded a week ago today; the cold wave follows a snow storm which fell over a wide area Thanksgiving Day.

State Sen. Russell L. Dearmont of Cape Girardeau is appointed assistant attorney for the Missouri Pacific Railroad; he will take his position with the company Jan. 1.

100 years ago: Nov. 29, 1904

The Houck railroad will be completed from Cape Girar-deau to Oak Ridge, a distance of 20 miles, this week; on Dec. 12, regular train service will be inaugurated, two trains each way every day.

Gus Sander, a well-known carpenter, while working on the roof of a new house in the Painter Addition, slips and falls to the ground; he lands on a wheelbarrow, breaking his left arm at the elbow.
