Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced change in Stake Presidency for Cape Girardeau Stake at semi-annual meeting Nov. 15; Larry Watkins of Marion, Ill., is new president; he selected Jack Kramer of Cape Girardeau as first counselor and Rick Higgenbotham of Farmington as second counselor.

City officials have set mid-December as date they will market bonds to finance $4 million project to expand city's parks and recreation facilities; Assistant Manager Al Stoverink said last week city hopes to close on sale of bonds in early January, which would put city on track to actually start on project late in construction season next year.

25 years ago: Nov. 29, 1977

Cape Girardeau's new Central High School gymnasium, with all its attendant physical educational facilities for students, will be unveiled to public Sunday afternoon with open house; gymnasium is in final stages of completion.

Cairo, Ill. -- In sharp exchange with Alexander County Commissioners, Clinton J. Thurston, state's attorney and county board's legal representative, threatened last night to sue them if they cut $18,000 from his budget for his assistant's salary.

50 years ago: Nov. 29, 1952

First snow of season begins falling early in day in advance of weather forecast that poses threat of freezing rain or sleet for this section of state before nightfall; snow clings to ground, but traffic keeps it melting on streets and highways; temperature hovers around 27 degrees.

Arnold Roth, insurance agency head, was elected president of Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce last night at meeting of board of director at Country Club; other officers elected were: First vice president, A.P. Rueseler Jr.; second vice president, Pat Tlapek, and treasurer, L.W. Simmons.

75 years ago: Nov. 29, 1927

Harold Perry, 16, is not only youngest student in Teachers College, but came farthest distance of any student to attend school; he is son of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Perry of Paris, France, and traveled more than 4,000 miles to come to school; Perry plans to complete four-year course at local college and is living with his grandmother, Mrs. Rosena Perry, 283 N. Henderson.

Surveyors, reported to be working for Frisco Railroad, continue their work of surveying route around Cape Girardeau; in last few days, they have been working west of town, and stakes driven near Broadway at intersection of Clark avenue attract particular attention.
