From tree farms to tree lots, area residents have lot to choose from in picking out family Christmas tree; some Cape Girardeau area tree lots opened Wednesday, while others officially open this morning; getting rid of tree after season will be little more difficult.

Cape Girardeau retailers greet traditional first day of Christmas shopping season, expected to be busiest of the year, with good cheer brought on by strong sales; retailers say they look for shoppers to continue their spending ways this holiday season.

25 years ago: Nov. 29, 1976

Last night was coldest in Cape Girardeau in almost three years, but apparently early onset of cold weather this year has encouraged most residents to prepare for winter; temperature drops to 10 degrees early this morning, coldest weather since Jan. 1, 1974, when thermometer registered 4 degrees.

Carbondale, Ill. - New director of crime study center at Southern Illinois University, Dr. Lawrence E. Bennett, is seeking regional cooperation with other universities - including Southeast Missouri State - in establishing training centers for policemen and law enforcement students.

50 years ago: Nov. 29, 1951

Elmer A. Strom of Strom & Spradling law firm has been elected 1952 president of Chamber of Commerce; he succeeds L.A. Byron of Missouri Utilities Co.; other officers elected were J.E. "Jack" Himmelberger and A.C. Rueseler, vice presidents, and C.P. Harris, treasurer.

Sikeston - C.H. Denman announces sale of his newspaper, the Sikeston Herald, to Joe Hanebrink, recent editor of Cabool Enterprise; Denman has been publisher of Herald for nearly 36 years, except for brief period following World War II, when he sold paper to his sons, Clint Denman Jr. and Ward Denman; he repurchased property in early 1950.

75 years ago: Nov. 29, 1926

High officials of Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. and affiliated corporations attend dedication of new $50,000 Marquette office building near plant in South Cape Girardeau; building, one of most ornate and substantial in Cape Girardeau, has been completed and is ready for occupancy.

Large crowd enjoys lecture given by Frank O. Otto, food expert, at St. Mary's Hall in evening; he opens lecture explaining wonderful power of natural food and its relation to health and later demonstrates new and simple method of retaining important vital elements in food.
