1987

Thanksgiving Day. Salvation Army personnel and volunteers feed approximately 500 persons at the annual feast of turkey and all the fixings; along with the sit-down meal at the Army facility at Sprigg and Good Hope streets, dinners also are delivered to shut-ins.

Members of the Delta Chi fraternity at Southeast Missouri State University collected donations from several area businesses to buy 29 turkeys for Thanksgiving; the fraternity delivered the birds to needy families in the surrounding area.

1962

The Cape Sanitation Co., which for the past three years has held the city franchise for the collection and disposal of refuse, won't exercise its option for the renewal of the contract; the franchise expires Dec. 31, after which equipment for the firm will be for sale.

Marvin E. Proffer of Jackson, representative-elect from Cape Girardeau County, joins other new members of the Missouri General Assembly in Jefferson City for the first of three tours of state institutions.

1937

A contract for the construction of a stadium for the Jackson public schools with WPA aid was signed by the school board last night; K.E. Kies, president of the board, recorded his vote against the proposition, then signed the contract under protest; Kies maintained that the board has no right to appropriate $6,000 of the district's funds for that purpose.

While the Teachers College Indians ran away with the MIAA football championship, they failed to capture individual honors; the Indians placed only three men on the conference all-star first team: quarterback George Godwin, guard Chet Conrad and tackle Wayne Goddard.

1912

Promptly at 1 p.m., aviator Tony Jannus starts his flying demonstration; like a bird, he skims the water of the Mississippi River, circles and dips, rises and lowers at will before a large, vocal crowd; on his last round, the wind threatens to push him against the piling of the government jetty north of town on the Illinois side; so Jannus steps out onto a wing to cause the machine to swerve in a circle.

A big pipe organ for Centenary Methodist Church has been shipped from the factory and is expected to be installed in the church by the middle of December.
