BENTON, Mo. -- Plans are being made to grow 200 to 300 acres of cucumbers in this area in 1965; a planning meeting will be held Wednesday at the courthouse here, at which representatives of a pickle company and others will speak; the plan is to contract with farmers to produce the crop, and the ripe cucumbers will be trucked to a packing plant of the Heinz Co. at Muscatine, Iowa.

Three directors have been elected by the Southeast Missouri District Fair Association: Joe Krueger, Leeman Gerecke and Martin Loos.

The Smelterville WPA recreation center continues to be a busy place, with quilting and rug making going on among the women, the girls preparing Christmas dolls and the boys taking hikes.

Tentative arrangements are being made to locate the 10th Congressional District 1940 Census office in Cape Girardeau; W. Grover Wicker of Kennett, Missouri, will be in charge as district director.

1914

A copy of the rules adopted by representatives of seven high schools in Southeast Missouri that have football teams nearly every year has been received; the league was organized for the purpose of putting competitive high school athletics on a more stable footing and in a more systematic form in this part of the state.

N.C. Tripp, W.F. Hunsicker and Lawrence Randleman, with their families, come over in three automobiles in the morning on a pleasure trip to Jackson; they return to their homes in Anna, Illinois, in the afternoon.
