A flagpole and memorial were recently dedicated at Maple Avenue United Methodist Church by the United Methodist Men in memory of two deceased members, Jim Sidener, who was killed in an airplane crash in June 1983, and Weldon Ruebel, a Vietnam veteran.

Sister Deborah Urhahn made her permanent vows as an Adorer of the Blood of Christ on Nov. 11 in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at Red Bud, Ill.; she is a native of Benton, Mo.

50 years ago: Nov. 25, 1959

An operating gain registered by the SEMO District Fair at its September showing -- the largest and best attended of any in its long history -- was wiped out by permanent improvements on the grounds; the exposition showed a net cash loss of $1,088.30.

The Cape Girardeau School Board announces appointment of a permanent, 27-member citizens advisory committee charged with studying "the public school, its scope, its accomplishments, its personnel, its financing and its drawbacks."

75 years ago: Nov. 25, 1934

The Rev. J.W. Ellis, formerly pastor of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau and now pastor of the M.E. Church at Lamar, Mo., is guest speaker in the morning at New McKendree Methodist Church at Jackson.

An annex to the local store operated by Montgomery Ward & Co. will be opened Tuesday at 118 Independence St., where a low-price line of furniture will be carried.

100 years ago: Nov. 25, 1909

Thanksgiving Day. A sunrise prayer service ushers in the holiday at Centenary Methodist Church; it is a union service.

A gasoline launch, the Leonore, lands at the wharf and awaits a party of St. Louis businessmen, who come in on the noon train; they are then taken to Goose Island for four days of duck hunting; the party consists of G. Von Brecht and Charles E. Von Brecht, president and secretary of G. Von Brecht Butcher Supply Co.; Frank Stolle, a contractor, and J.W. Locatell of the Anheuser-Busch company.
