The assassination of President John F. Kennedy 20 years ago is recalled; the Southeast Missourian announced the news to its readers in an extra printed on the night of Nov. 22, 1963.

Bill Stroup, the chief of security for Mid-America Motel Corp. here, which owns the Holiday Inn, announces his candidacy on the Republican ticket for the office of Cape Girardeau County sheriff.

50 years ago: Nov. 22, 1958

Fire departments from five towns were summoned to McClure, Ill., yesterday when a fire that destroyed a new residence threatened to spread to other dwellings; destroyed was a five-bedroom frame house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Goodman, who had occupied it only since May 1957; besides the McClure firetruck, help was sent by departments at Anna, Tamms, Thebes and Cairo, Ill.

A large filling station is to be erected on a lot in the 2200 block on west Broadway owned by the Martin Operle family of St. Marys, Mo.

Cape Girardeau County pushes ahead with plans for setting up work projects financed with government money and designed to furnish immediate employment to the idle; the Cape Girardeau City Council, Cape Special Road District and the County Court have worked out a list of tentative projects, mostly road repair and graveling.

By resolution, the Cape Girardeau City Council recommends to the State Highway Department the expenditure of $34,000 federal aid funds in the widening of South Sprigg Street from Elm Street to the city limits, a distance of slightly over two miles.

100 years ago: Nov. 22, 1908

The quarterly meeting is held at the German Methodist Church; the Rev. C.J. Moeller of Gordonville preaches at both morning and evening services.

In the evening, the huge barn at the county poor farm, on the gravel road midway between Cape Girardeau and Jackson, is destroyed by fire; the loss, which includes not only the building, but also a hay-laden loft, grain bins with this year's crops and two calves, amounts to about $3,500; there is no way to fight the fierce flames, and the only work at hand is to save the farm implements and horses.
