Shirley Talley of Cape Girardeau has been elected to a state level post with the Title I Parent Advisory Council; she will serve as first vice president of the body for a two-year term; Talley has served with the local Title I Parent Advisory Council for the last four years.
A painting contractor and former real estate salesman becomes the third person to file for the city council seat being vacated by Mayor Paul W. Stehr; Donald H. Gammon joins Loretta Schneider and Dr. Sheldon Gardner in the race for Stehr's seat, the only one available in April.
The city council at its regular meeting, lengthened by the appearance before it of a number of citizens on special matters, passes an ordinance creating the position of street foreman in the Public Works Department; the new position will pay not more than $4,200 yearly.
William F. Seabaugh, the son of Dr. and Mrs. William O.L. Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau, was the first infant to have a picture made with a Nursery Identi-foto installed recently at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
Fire originating near the engine room destroys the manufacturing plant of the Riverside Ice and Fuel Co., 426 S. Middle St., which for many years housed equipment of the Cape Brewery Co.; flames are discovered at 4 a.m., and when the firemen arrive, the central portion of the main structure is blazing.
ZALMA, Mo. -- More than a thousand people, not counting schoolchildren, attend dedication ceremonies for the new highway bridge over Castor River; after a parade from the school house to the bridge, headed by the community band of Jackson, a number of people speak, including Dean R.S. Douglass of the State College.
One of the largest real estate deals in Southeast Missouri was consummated yesterday, involving several thousand acres; the name of the new company is the Little River Land Co., and it is composed of Harry Machen, William Stubblefield, Otto Kochtitzky, Dr. W.C. Patton; A.J. Matthews, Steven Hunter, C.M. Smith of Sikeston, Mo.; E.G. Rolwing and E.J. Deal of Charleston, Mo., and W.N. Barron of Poplar Bluff, Mo.
The Lutheran church will soon be the proud possessor of a fine new pipe organ, probably the largest in Southeast Missouri.
