The fund drive for the restoration of old St. Vincent's Church has passed the $40,000 mark, giving further assurance that the old church will continue to play a part in the religious and cultural life of the community.
The embers of a dispute last summer between the Cape Girardeau Fire Department and the city were fanned yesterday when the department alleged that city hasn't lived up to the terms of a contract agreement by refusing to approve incentive pay increases to eight members of the department.

Approximately $35,000 will be needed to meet pressing obligations of the Southeast Missouri Hospital, it is stated by C.F. Fluhrer, chairman of the emergency fund drive that will begin Dec. 9 and close Dec. 14.
While Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Bruhl were away from their Jackson home one day this week, their son Dallas, 9, took a small-caliber rifle and started out on a bear hunt, taking along his little brother Eugene, 3; the gun was accidentally discharged, and the bullet passed through the fleshy part of Eugene's right arm; the wound wasn't serious and is healing nicely.
100 years ago: Nov. 21, 1904
C.J. Gratiot, who has been manager of the Cape City Soap Works since its reorganization, has taken charge of the sales office of the company in St. Louis; in the future, C.G. Juden will have charge of the local factory.
G.M. Drum, who has been in the tea and coffee business at Broadway and Middle Street, has leased the room just east of The Daily Republican office, and in a few days will open up a grocery store; he will continue the tea and coffee business and will add a complete line of staple and fancy groceries.
