Nineteen-year-old man and two 13-year-old boys were arrested Sunday in bizarre vandalism incident at Old Lorimier Cemetery; black spray paint was used to design cross and pentagram on grave marker located in eastern section of 184-year-old cemetery; in addition, small pumpkin was placed atop marker with snake inside, and pumpkin was burned.
City council advances plan to annex Twin Lakes subdivision, Cape Girardeau's first major annexation effort in several years; subdivision, situated just west of Interstate 55 along Hopper Road, is composed of nearly 100 homes.
25 years ago: Nov. 2, 1977
About 200 employees of old Florsheim Shoe Co. factory on North Main refuse to cross picket lines in morning at factory and join about 600 striking employees from new Florsheim plant at Highway 74 and South Boulevard, who walked off job Monday; enough employees cross picket lines set up by employees from new plant, however, to maintain limited operations at old factory.
There is parade in morning, but participants aren't musicians - they are quackers; after absence of nearly five months, flock of ducks and geese that has attracted youngsters armed with crackers and stale bread crumbs for decades is back at its Capaha Park Lagoon home; flock was removed from lagoon this summer when botulism killed 21 of birds.
50 years ago: Nov. 2, 1952
Sunday services will continue to be held in Centenary Methodist Church if at all possible despite redecorating that is under way there; plans are to clean up interior each week for Sunday services; painting, replastering, installing new pews, and laying carpets are some of jobs being done to dress up sanctuary.
The Right Rev. Arthur C. Lichtenberger of St. Louis, Bishop of Missouri, is at Christ Episcopal Church in morning to conduct service of Holy Communion and to confirm class of adults and young people; Lichtenberger has been bishop co-adjutor past year, and officially became Bishop of Missouri yesterday.
75 years ago: Nov. 2, 1927
With less than half the required amount subscribed and late solicitation proving virtually useless, campaign for $60,000 to give Cape Girardeau its second railroad is halted and complete abandonment of project appears probable; W.J. Kies, head of committee making drive for fund, has notified Chamber of Commerce that he and his committee have ceased solicitations and asked to be relieved of their duties.
Congregation of First Christian Church votes unanimously to extend call to the Rev. Alphon Mendenhall of Aurora, Mo., to pastorate here; Mendenhall was in Cape Girardeau Sunday upon invitation of pastoral committee of church and preached at morning and evening services.
