Cape Girardeau Mayor Gene Rhodes will be one of a delegation of U.S. mayors visiting with 17 Russian mayors in Washington, D.C., this weekend; the gathering is a follow-up to a September trip to the Soviet Union in connection with the Citizen Ambassador Program of People to People International.

Fire caused an estimated $25,000 to $30,000 in damage at the Cauble & Field grocery warehouse, 420 S. Middle St., last night; the flames were confined to the north wing of the brick structure, but dense smoke poured through the remainder of the warehouse.

Sen. Albert M. Spradling Jr. says he isn't removing himself from the state Senate picture by his renewed interest in seeking the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor; he says he will make a hard race for the Senate, if he can't pull support together for a race for lieutenant governor.

An unofficial reopening of Broadway Theater will be held Thanksgiving Day and will feature the showing of "You Can't Take It With You"; improvements to the theater, including installation of new seats, should be completed by the holiday.

Construction of the roof of the arena building at the new city park west of Cape Girardeau has been started; not much progress can be made on the roofing job, however, until a little more concrete is poured at the west wall of the building.

1913

The Citizens' Committee is calling for a mass meeting of residents at the courthouse to protest the opening of the Crescent saloon at the Idan-ha corner at Broadway and Fountain Street; the meeting will be called as soon as the petition for the saloon is filed with the county clerk; the committee will endeavor to prove that people generally are opposed to a saloon at this conspicuous location.

Clay and Henry Phelps return from a month's stay in Oklahoma, where they spent most of their time at Tulsa, attending the dry-farming congress.
