The Greyhound Bus strike has cut the number of buses leaving daily from Cape Girardeau by half; however, officials at the Union Bus Depot, 16 N. Frederick St., say they don't anticipate any problems in getting anyone to his or her destination for Thanksgiving Day.
Plans to construct a 4-H livestock exhibit barn and a sanitary sewer line to accommodate relocation of the carnival area during the SEMO District Fair were discussed at the dinner meeting of the Fair Board Association last night.
50 years ago: Nov. 18, 1958
Hunters in Southeast Missouri bagged 527 deer in the district's 10 counties yesterday, the first day of the six-day gun season; of that number, Ste. Genevieve County led with a kill of 200 deer.
Charles Matthews, a junior second-string fullback, was the State College Indians' leading scorer for the 1958 football season with 42 points on seven touchdowns; Ken Weakley, a junior halfback, was the Indians' leading ground gainer with 406 yards on 58 carries.
75 years ago: Nov. 18, 1933
The Reconstruction Finance Co. in Washington has approved a loan of $2,188,194 to the Little River Drainage District; the money will be used in the purchase and retirement of the outstanding bonds of the district.
In letters addressed to the County Court and R.B Oliver Jr., Sen. Langdon Jones explains how the federal government has made available federal funds to be used in small projects to each county in its civil works program; the program will provide immediate employment intended to remove a large number of families from relief lists.
100 years ago: Nov. 18, 1908
While digging at the southwest corner of the lot where the new federal building will stand at the corner of Fountain Street and Broadway, excavators struck a pile of rock extending about 30 feet down; Henry Brunke remembers there was a well at the site; about 30 years ago, a man was killed in the well, and the people living at the house filled the hole.
S.M. McAtee, a Jackson merchant, has sold a half interest in his store to three of his employees: Albert Ruloff, Alvin Kneibert and Halston Poe.
