An early-morning fire heavily damages parts of the sixth floor of the Southeast Missouri State University Towers South dormitory; approximately 370 students are evacuated when fire breaks out at about 12:30 a.m., but no one is injured.
By official proclamation of Jackson Mayor Carlton Meyer, today is Rev. Walter J. Keisker Day; Keisker, pastor emeritus of St. Paul Lutheran Church, is honored for his 50 years in the ministry to his community, plus his many other secular and nonsecular activities.

The Frisco Railroad has agreed to make the improvements to the riverfront according to the recommendations made by the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club; the road will build a 600-foot river wall, walk and parkway at this time and in a few years will finish up the work to the south line of William Street.
