City vehicle stickers have been scrapped in Jackson; the Board of Aldermen voted unanimously last night to pass an ordinance abolishing the stickers; the action comes on the heels of recent approval of the city's one-half cent transportation sales tax.

Cape Girardeau's downtown is marking the Christmas season with new decorations over Main Street; the new decorations were paid for by downtown merchants.

1962

More Cape Girardeau hunters report they shot deer; Tom Dietiker and Bill Glass each bagged deer near Grassy, Mo., yesterday; Carl Eakins, Cecil Eakins, David Kies, Earl Stratton, Bud Ervin and Horace Hitt got three deer near Weingarten, Mo., Thursday and Friday.

The State College Indians' happy season ends on a sour note, as the locals fall to Murray (Ky.) State, 19-15; the defeat is especially better because the Indians led the Racers going into the final quarter; the Indians' final record on the season is 7-3, the best mark since 1959.

A movement is underway to honor Weight Officer Frank S. Kuehnel of the State Highway Department; yesterday, he dived into the icy waters of Ramsey Creek to save two Clarkton, Mo., women from drowning after their car plunged into the stream; the driver of the car was killed.

An orchestra, which will play all the dance spots within a 100-mile radius of Cape Girardeau, is being organized here; heading the organization, which will be headquartered here, are trumpet player Dave Davidson of Louisville, Ky., and drummer Willie Green of Fort Worth, Texas; other members of the orchestra are guitarist Ray Wallick of Batesville, Ark., Andy "Piccolo Pete" Randles of New Orleans, La., Ralph Minton of Cape Girardeau and Jack Kinder of Illmo.

1912

The towboat Barrett, formerly the Louis Houck, is being dismantled at Cairo, Ill.; the Barrett line is building a new boat to take its place; the Houck was built at Madison, Ind., in 1889 for the Eagle Packet Co. of St. Louis; it had the machinery of the steamer Will H. Hayes, which was wrecked by ice at the St. Louis wharf in 1887.

J.H. Freeze, inventor of the Freeze New Model Separator, returns from North Dakota where he went to demonstrate his machine in the flax and barley fields.
