A $653,963.83 highway construction project will benefit the Cape Girardeau area by providing a new bridge on Route W over Cape LaCroix Creek; the existing 1958 bridge in the western part of the city will be removed and replaced at the same location with a new span.
Noting that it is a controversial item, acting Mayor Robert K. Herbst announces that the Cape Girardeau City Council would delay the first reading of a proposed ordinance establishing limiting parking in the 500 block of Alta Vista Drive until the next meeting due to the absence of three council members, including Mayor Howard C. Tooke.

The guest speaker for both services at the First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau is the Rev. W.C. Link Jr., pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Liberty, Mo.; the Rev. and Mrs. Link are natives of Charlotte, N.C., and have two sons.
Members of Red Star Baptist Church have approved an all-time high budget goal for 1959 of $62,400, an increase of $10,400 over the 1958 budget; Red Star was organized in 1920 and has a membership of nearly 1,100.
75 years ago: Nov. 16, 1933
In one of the lightest elections in recent years in Cape Girardeau, voters yesterday defeated by a majority of almost 2 to 1 a proposal to authorize the school board to issue $130,000 in bonds for the purchase of school sites and construction of school buildings.
Finishing touches are being put on the new Montgomery Ward & Co. department store building on Main Street, preparatory to its formal opening; the Broadway store has been closed, and the stock of goods and fixtures are being moved to the new building.
100 years ago: Nov. 16, 1908
A wreck on this division of the Frisco Railroad takes place early in the morning near Hayti, Mo.; a locomotive blows up, killing brakeman Fred Bossler instantly, and probably fatally injuring conductor J.H. Hathaway and fireman H.C. Brock; engineer Sam Frissell is also seriously injured.
A fire that breaks out in the Marshall-Harrison Mercantile Co. store at Morehouse, Mo., shortly after midnight causes a great loss of money and one life.
