The city of Cape Girardeau is seeking more than a quarter-million dollars in block grant funds to assist the Florsheim Shoe Co., which is planning a new factory in the vicinity of Highway 74 and South West End Boulevard; the facility would replace the Florsheim plant on North Main Street.

James Lansmon, vice president and treasurer with Missouri Utilities Co., is given Boy Scouting's highest honor: the Silver Beaver Award; Lansmon has been involved with Scouting since 1964, when he became a Webelos leader.

50 years ago: Nov. 16, 1957

The Cape Special Road District Commission has agreed to help with the paving near the new Jefferson School on Minnesota Avenue; a new concrete street, 36 feet wide, will be built, with five-foot sidewalks on either side; the improvement will run from Bloomfield Street to Brink Street; the road district will pay 25 percent toward the cost of the program.

The 11th Missourian Art Exhibition opens its doors in the evening for the first of two showings; guest artist is Frank B. Nuderscher of St. Louis.

75 years ago: Nov. 16, 1932

At a conference of members of the board of trustees of Southeast Missouri Hospital and the Cape Girardeau City Council, it is decided to hold another meeting at which members of the County Court will be called in for the purpose of working out a basis for compensating the hospital for taking care of future charity patients.

A blizzard roaring out of the northwest holds Cape Girardeau and the district in its grip as it brings the lowest temperature of the season and the second snowfall of the month; the mercury tumbles to 20 degrees and is accompanied by an inch of sleet and snow.

100 years ago: Nov. 16, 1907

There are more farmers in Cape Girardeau than there have been for a long time; the merchants do a fine business; the weather is ideal just now for shopping by the country folk, who are taking advantage of the good condition of the roads.

Charles W. Hassler, wife and child have moved to Cape Girardeau and are residing on Independence Street; Hassler is the local agent for National Cash Register; he will soon open an office here.
