Eighty-eight-year-old woman was carried from her burning home by two passersby last night, action Acting Fire Chief Max Jauch says may have saved her life; Ruby Stone is rescued by Joseph Orr, member of cross country and track teams at Southeast Missouri State University, and unidentified man; she was treated and released at local hospital.

Architects unveil designs for two planned school buildings at meeting of Cape Girardeau Board of Education and Project Partnership Committee; price tag for project, which includes construction of schools as well as addition to Jefferson School and air-conditioning of all city's public schools, is put at $22.2 million-plus.

25 years ago: Nov. 16, 1977

No date has been set for implementing two-way traffic design on Broadway from Main to Lorimier street, says City Manager W.G. Lawley; but work has begun to erect appropriate signs and safety barricade in order that chance can be made.

Highest honor for Scout leaders in Southeast Missouri Council of Boy Scouts of America was bestowed yesterday on Cape Girardeau man with nearly two decades of Scouting experience at annual Shawnee District recognition dinner; Silver Beaver Award was presented to Earl Stratton, who has served in positions ranging from cub master to Southeast Missouri Council commissioner during past 18 years.

50 years ago: Nov. 16, 1952

H.H. Haas and Earl Hazen fly to Cape Girardeau following business trip to New York City and Washington in interest of Associates International Ltd., which they own; they come here to see Haas' mother, Mrs. Laura Haas, and Hazen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Hazen; they were in East to acquire producing oil wells in Texas and Venzuela; company now owns or has interest in 40 wells.

State College Indians concluded their gridiron season Saturday, losing at Bowling Green, Ky., 41-0; defeat was Braves' fourth of season in eight games played, and it was first season since 1946 that Indian squad has played .500 ball.

75 years ago: Nov. 16, 1927

Board of Regents of State Teachers College authorizes continuation of work on Houck Field; work will include remainder of grading and constructing of track around field; knoll on Broadway, which shuts off view of field house from street, will be graded down; plans for construction of concrete bleachers at sides of field are discussed, but actual work isn't authorized.

Burns sustained in explosion which resulted when she poured kerosene on smoldering fire in kitchen stove proved fatal yesterday to Mrs. Ida Cratt Balsmann, 26, wife of Barney Balsmann, garage owner at Uniontown; she died at St. Francis Hospital, where she was brought immediately; she is survived by her husband, son and daughter, five brothers and five sisters.
