Jim Lohr, who said he wouldn't consider resigning until the season was over, wasted no time; the 10-year head coach of the Southeast Missouri State University football program told his team yesterday that he was leaving the program following the 1-9 season.

50 years ago: Nov. 14, 1958

Financing of a new dormitory for women on the State College campus advanced a step Thursday on a resolution by the board of regents setting Dec. 15 as the date bids will be received for $1,515,000 in revenue bonds; it is expected that the federal government will be the only bidder.

The threat of woods and grass fires in the area is relieved by this morning's rain; there had been a number of fires in the district, and one of these was on the western hillside just east of Chaffee, Mo., to the peak of the bluffs in the vicinity of Rockview, Mo.

Fire, evidently starting in the attic, does heavy damage to the dwelling owned and occupied by Ora Burch and her mother on South Spanish Street; the fire in the 12-room, 2 1/2-story house is well started when various people simultaneously see it, flames bursting out many places by the time firetrucks arrive.

By a majority of nearly 5 to 1, Cape Girardeau voters at a special election refuse to give Missouri Utilities Co. another 20-year franchise to operate its electric and water plants in Cape Girardeau.

100 years ago: Nov. 14, 1908

The little town of Commerce, Mo., eight miles south of Cape Girardeau, was visited by a disastrous fire the night before last; the large general merchandise store doing business under the name C.J. Anderson & Co. was severely damaged, with about half of its stock being destroyed or water soaked.

C.M. Buckner of Buckner-Ragsdale Co. came in last night from Marshall, Mo., to see how the new Cape Girardeau store will look; the grand opening will be held next week.
