One of largest Veterans Day parades in Illinois, consisting of about 200 units, is held at Anna in afternoon; parades, avenues of flags and other program are held throughout area as nation honors its war dead; parade is also held in Jackson prior to Veterans Day program at American Legion Hall.

Avenue of flags around entrance to Missouri Veterans Home is dedicated as part of Veterans Day observance at home; project was coordinated by Cape Girardeau Jaycees and includes 35 flags around circular drive at main entrance to home; flags were donated by U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson and U.S. Sen. Christopher Bond.

25 years ago: Nov. 11, 1977

Veterans Day pays tribute to men and women who served this country in various wartime duties; in Cape Girardeau holiday is marked by annual parade up Broadway, from Lorimier street to Capaha Park; parade marshal is Charles T. Nelson; program follows at park band shell, sponsored by Joint Veterans Council; speaker is G.C. "Gus" Cramer, executive vice president of Communication Workers of America.

Christmas will begin tomorrow at Glenn House, when Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau hosts its annual Carriage House Craft Shop Christmas Tea and its first Glenn House 1977 Christmas showing; house has been transformed into display case showing authentic Christmas customs and toys.

50 years ago: Nov. 11, 1952

Armistice Day is observed with closing of banks, post office, federal, state, county and city offices, although businesses generally continue without interruption; number of members of American Legion travel to Kennett to attend annual Armistice Day meeting of 14th District.

City council was informed in letter read at special meeting yesterday that Humane Society is about ready to close up shop and return to city burden of handling the dog situation, unless it can be provided funds of $300 monthly for operations; council members are reluctant to provide additional municipal funds, with most agreeing that city has done more than its share to keep organization going.

75 years ago: Nov. 11, 1927

Armistice Day. Business suspends in Cape Girardeau for two minutes at 11 a.m. in observance of end of World War; during the period, whistles blow and bells are sounded, much as they did nine years ago when word flashed to world that war was over.

At noon, special finance committee of Chamber of Commerce announces that pledges and cash on hand, including some promises that are considered nearly certain, bring total of railroad fund to about $53,000; this leaves just $7,000 still to be raised; finance committee appeals to all residents to promote the "give a day's wages" idea.
