25 years ago: Nov. 10, 1980

The Cape Girardeau City Council has tentatively agreed to pay a $30,000 subsidy as part of a new one-year contract with the Cape County Private Ambulance Service Inc., according to County Court Presiding Judge Gene Huckstep; he notes that the court is still negotiating with George F. Rouse, owner and operator of the ambulance service, on the new contract.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Paul W. Stehr says he will make a decision within a week on whether he will be a candidate in the April general election for a fourth term on the city council.

50 years ago: Nov. 10, 1955

Service by the Riverside Regional Library, serving three counties and with headquarters in Jackson, will be initiated in Scott County on Monday, announces Otto Koenig, the librarian; service in Cape Girardeau and Perry counties will start at a later date.

After a year spent in safety work on Guam, Manning P. Greer is back in Cape Girardeau for a vacation; he spent 12 months on the island in the Pacific as safety engineer for the Brown, Pacific & Maxom Construction Co., which had Navy and Air Force contracts there.

75 years ago: Nov. 10, 1930

Mr. and Mrs. J. Wolf take charge of the National Housefurnishing Co., on Main Street, and will conduct it in the future as the Wolf Furniture Co.; the store is being renovated, and much new stock will be added at once.

The Cape Hebrew School held its first meeting yesterday in its rooms on the second floor of the Cape Girardeau Building and Loan Association building on Main Street; Dr. Bierenbaum of St. Louis will travel to Cape Girardeau each Sunday to conduct classes; about 15 Jewish families living here organized the school.

100 years ago: Nov. 10, 1905

Mrs. R.M. Brown arrived yesterday from Illinois to make her home here; her husband is employed at the Glenn Mercantile Co.; the couple will reside at 203 S. Pacific St.

August Luebbers of St. Louis and Daniel H. Schumer of Schumer's Spring, Mo., have purchased the C.W. Sabine stock of groceries at 9 S. Spanish St. and will continue the business; both are experienced grocery men and will no doubt build up a big patronage.
