The city of Cape Girardeau has received an "A" rating on its $5 million multipurpose building bond issue from two principal bond rating services, Standard and Poor's Corp. and Moody's Investor Service, both based in New York.

Raymond C. Schonhoff, well known throughout the region for his dairy farming work and agricultural activities, died yesterday at age 81.

50 years ago: Oct. 9, 1959

Application for a federal grant of $23,000 annually for a five-year period to carry out a program for the physically and mentally disabled homebound in Southeast Missouri counties has been made by the Cape Girardeau County Society for Crippled Children and Adults; the work will be carried out by the Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center on the grounds of Southeast Missouri Hospital.

Missouri's University School of Medicine has accepted 75 first-year students, including seven women; the new class will also include Clarence J. Ritter of Jackson.

75 years ago: Oct. 9, 1934

W.F.D. Batjer, secretary of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, announces plans for the second annual Halloween frolic; masqueraders will march from the high school to Houck Stadium and then parade several times around the cinder track so judges may select the best costumes.

DETROIT -- The St. Louis Cardinals win the seventh game, 11-0, and the World Series -- four games to three -- as Dizzy Dean pitches a shutout by the widest margin in Series history; a riot among the left-field bleacher patrons forces Commissioner Kenesaw M. Landis to put Joe Medwick, Cardinal outfielder, out of the game in the sixth.

100 years ago: Oct. 9, 1909

Of the many excellent displays at the county fair, one of the best-patronized was the one made by Lee Albert of Gold Coin Flour, manufactured in Minnesota; Miss M.J. Webb, the mill's demonstrator, and two other women were kept busy distributing delicious hot buttered biscuits made from this flour.

A full car load of millwork for the interior of the new federal building arrived yesterday; carpenters should begin its instillation Monday.
