Cape Girardeau County government is faced with the loss of $275,000 in federal revenue-sharing money if Congress fails to continue the program during its lame duck session, which will convene after the Nov. 4 general election.

Two university professors and a retired university president -- all graduates of Southeast Missouri State University -- will be honored later this month by the university as recipients of the school's Alumni Merit Awards; the recipients are Dr. F. Christine Brown of Memphis, Tenn., Dr. Marvin H. Wilkening of Socorro, N.M., and Dr. Mark F. Scully of Cape Girardeau, president of the university for 19 years.

50 years ago: Oct. 9, 1955

The Rev. O.H. Pooker, visitor of the Cape Girardeau Circuit of Lutheran Churches in this area, is the main speaker at the annual Mission Festival of Trinity Lutheran Church; he and George Hilpert, chairman of the Cape Girardeau Circuit, present a program titled "Our Venture of Faith."

Three members of the Cape Girardeau Civil Air Patrol Squadron, participating in a simulated airplane accident at St. Joseph, Mo., locate the lost craft 54 minutes after the search begins, setting a regional record for the program.

75 years ago: Oct. 9, 1930

Fred A. Groves of Groves Motor Co. announces that his building at North Sprigg and Themis streets will undergo a complete remodeling on the interior, with a few changes on the exterior; the first change to be made on the exterior will be the addition of a new drive-in entrance at the south front to provide two entrances to the building, one from the rear by way of Themis Street and the other on Sprigg Street.

Contractors are doing rapid work on Highway 61 between Sikeston, Mo., and Morley, Mo., and will begin pouring concrete by Oct. 15.

100 years ago: Oct. 9, 1905

A large number of plasterers met yesterday at the Haas Brothers' hall at the corner of Good Hope and Sprigg streets to make plans for the formation of a local branch of the plasterers' union; they will apply for a charter under the jurisdiction of the International Operative Plasterers' Association.

The first session ever of the federal court in Cape Girardeau convenes in the afternoon; a large crowd hears speeches by several distinguished guests, including insurance commissioner W.D. Vandiver and Sen. William J. Stone.
