Cape Girardeau public school officials say proposal to extend school year to 200 days may work in Sikeston but not in Cape Girardeau; since Cape Girardeau school buildings aren't air conditioned, discussion of addition of days to school calendar is out of question.

After about four months of providing water to Cape Girardeau residents, officials have yet to find evidence that antiquated sections of water system are badly deteriorated; Tom Taggert, water system manager for Mid-Missouri Engineering Inc., says there have been fewer water main failures since city took over operation of system in June.

25 years ago: Oct. 9, 1977

The Rev. Francis Roschke, first pastor of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, returns to preach at morning 20th anniversary worship services; 775-member congregation is celebrating anniversary throughout month of October with special Bible studies and worship programs; in fall of 1956, members of Trinity Lutheran Church made plans to form second Lutheran congregation in Cape Girardeau; St. Andrew was selected as name for this congregation on March 17, 1957.

Peace Evangelical Lutheran congregation dedicates its new church and parsonage in two special services; the Rev. Leroy Dobberstein preaches at morning dedicatory service, while the Rev. Roger Zehms, pastor of Martin Luther Lutheran Church in St. Louis, is heard at afternoon service.

50 years ago: Oct. 9, 1952

Department of Defense announces expected arrival of Beaver Victory at San Francisco, Calif., with bodies of two Southeast Missouri marines who lost their lives in Korea; remains of Sgt. John F. Bagwell III, nephew of Mrs. Josephine B. Vieth, will be taken to North Long Beach, Calif., for burial; Bagwell, who was reared in Diehlstadt, died Aug. 16; also aboard vessel is body of Cpl. Roy L. Griffin, husband of Mrs. Daisy D. Griffin of near Steele.

Effort to call referendum on rent-control resolution adopted by city council last week is abandoned by its organizers, when they fall short of required number of signers to their petition.

75 years ago: Oct. 9, 1927

Annual meeting of St. Louis conference of Methodist church closes at St. Louis in evening, with assignment of ministers to either their present or new posts; only two changes affect Cape Girardeau; the Rev. A.G. Johnson, for four years presiding elder of Cape Girardeau district, is transferred to pastorate of church at Flat River; and the Rev. J.C. Montgomery, pastor at Kennett past year, is selected to succeed Johnson.

President Joseph A. Serena of Teachers College returns from Columbia, where he attended meeting of heads of teachers college and university of state; meeting was called by head of University of Missouri to discuss present and future financial conditions of educational institutions of state.
