Marquette Cement Co. is making progress in correcting a pesky engineering problem that causes clouds of a light dustlike material to emit from the massive smokestack at its new plant in South Cape Girardeau; plant manager R.P. Jarrett says the stack is "much better" than it was prior to a 11-day shutdown that allowed engineers to work on the problem.
New weight and speed limits go into effect for the Burfordville covered bridge; the posted limit for the bridge is now three tons and the speed limit is 10 miles per hour; the span is one of four covered bridges in Missouri.
The Rev. H.H. McGinty, former pastor of First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, preaches the ordination sermon at the evening service of the church, where his son, Dr. Charles McGinty, is among seven ordained deacons.
PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Members of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Perryville celebrates the 90th anniversary of the church; guest speaker in the morning service is the Rev. H. Halter of Flat River, Mo., a son of a member of the congregation; the afternoon sermon is given by the Rev. W.E. Greisse, former assistant pastor.
Cape Girardeau Mayor Edward L. Drum announces the appointment of two additional firemen for the city department, bringing the force to six full-time men in addition to fire chief George French; named are Robert Kammer and Otto Fowler.
First basketball games in the newly organized Junior Ten Athletic Association, composed of 10 rural schools in Cape Girardeau, Scott and Bollinger counties, will be played Friday; schools in the league are Perkins, Randles, Pocahontas, Millersville, Indian Creek, Gordonville, Steppe, Patton, Sedgewickville and Egypt Mills.
The Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau is preparing to entertain the General Baptist Association Oct. 22 to 26; this will bring together most of the Baptist preachers in the state and several of the most prominent divines in the country; fully 500 visitors are expected to attend the conference; one of the features of the meeting will be a trip on Oct. 24 to the old Bethel Baptist Church.
The Rev. E.T. Adams, pastor of the Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, preaches both in the morning and in the afternoon at Mt. Tabor Chapel.
