Reformation Day is observed at Trinity Lutheran Church; guest speaker at worship services is the Rev. J.A.O. Preus III, associate professor of systematic theology at Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis.

The announced formation of a new chamber of commerce has prompted criticism from Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce officials, who say the Cape Centre Chamber of Commerce will cause "divisiveness" in the community.

1963

In a light vote yesterday, Jackson voters passed the sewer trunk bond issue by a 326 to 68 margin; the issue carried in all four city wards.

The question of the title to .78 of an acre of land on Cape Girardeau's riverfront will go before Federal Judge Roy W. Harper on Thursday as part of a federal government condemnation suit; the suit seeks to claim land needed for the completion of the floodwall along North Main Street; possession of the land, formerly occupied by the Deimund Sand Co., has been taken, but the land condemnation suit is yet to be settled.

1938

The Rev. A.H. Beardsley will conduct his final services here during the coming week as rector of Christ Episcopal Church before going to Shawnee, Okla., to take over a new parish.

ORAN, Mo. -- After a lapse of several years, this community will have banking facilities tomorrow; the Oran State Bank will open for business in the morning; it formerly was the Bank of Blodgett and was moved to Oran; Judge Ray B. Lucas, a member of the Missouri Supreme Court, is president of the new institution, and G.J. Slickman is vice president.

A contractor starts putting heavy screens over the windows of the jail in the morning, so prisoners won't have a chance of getting booze, tobacco and other articles from their outside friends; for some time, many whiskey and beer bottles have been found in the jail, as well as clubs and other items.

The Hinchey-Greer Co. will in the future be known as the Hinchey Mercantile Co., P.P. Hinchey of De Soto, Mo., and W.W. Hinchey of Cape Girardeau having acquired the interests of Mr. Greer.
