A dispute between the Cape Girardeau City Council and the county court over the method used to subsidize the county ambulance service has the councilmen proposing alternatives to the present ambulance service; options proposed include the establishment of a city-operated ambulance service or the development of a service to be jointly operated by the city's two hospitals.
A large crowd surges inside the Arena Building in the morning, when the doors open for the 17th annual Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary Flea Market and Bazaar; proceeds from the day-long event will go to the new Cancer Information Center.
The Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. announces a split of its common and preferred stock on a 2 1/2 to 1 basis; it also announces that 250,000 shares of new common stock will be issued about Nov. 15 to help finance its $16,000,000 expansion program, which includes a new $7,000,000 plant in Cape Girardeau.
Tribute to the community for its construction of the building was paid by dean Curtis L. Wilson of the Missouri School of Mines in an address yesterday dedicating the new Central High School.

Today is The Daily Republican's birthday; on Oct. 3, last year, the present owners took charge of the defunct newspaper and issued their first edition; a year ago, The Republican had not a single subscriber and not a cent's worth of printing had been contracted for; today, the newspaper boasts a subscription list of 1,000 names.
J.H. Winkleman, who has been a bookkeeper in the Frisco storekeeper's office for two years, gave up his position Saturday and left for Murphysboro, Ill., where he will take a similar position with a brewery.
