It is announced that the rock group Heart will perform at the Show Me Center on Dec. 1; referring to the Tina Turner concert at the center Oct. 15, center director David Ross said, "Heart is major league, on the order with Tina Turner."

Leonard Rehg, district manager of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., 800 Broadway, announces that the wrecking operations of two buildings adjoining the telephone office will start today; the structures, to be razed by Penzel Construction Co. of Jackson will make way for additions to the telephone building.

CAIRO, Ill. -- A Cairo city policeman is shot in the evening with his own .357 Magnum during a traffic stop; while attempting to place an inebriated driver into his patrol car, the driver suddenly grabs the officer's gun and shoots him; officer Charles Williams is being treated for a non-life-threatening wound.

Fire, which spreads through the entire building before the alarm is sounded, virtually destroys the Pollack Hide & Fur Co. building at 518 Independence St.; an estimate of loss is uncertain, as it is yet unknown the extend of heat and water damage to a huge store of "green" -- or uncured -- cow hides in the basement of the building.

WPA workers, who have just finished a malarial control project in the Smelterville suburb, have started cleanup work along Cape LaCroix Creek, where brush was removed a year ago; stagnant pools near the creek will be drained and the debris hauled away.

1912

The congregation of First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau will begin construction of its new place of worship in early spring; the building will be of buff brick with Bedford stone trim; it will be built on a lot owned by the congregation at the corner of Themis and Ellis streets; the old church on Broadway will be sold.

Eugene St. Avit, the grocer, receives a new auto delivery van by the steamer Cape Girardeau.
