Southeast Missouri State University president Dr. Bill Stacy announces a financial gift of $300,000 that will be used to equip the new science building; the structure will be named in honor of Roger F. Rhodes of Gideon, Mo., a 1927 Southeast graduate.

50 years ago: Oct. 29, 1958

It is learned that two Cape Girardeau area sites for the proposed maximum security federal prison were inspected Jan. 16, 1957, by representatives of the Bureau of Prisons in company with chamber of commerce officials; they were taken to sites near Rockview and south of Illmo by Ray W. Call and John L. Wescoat; it is expected that recommendations for a prison site will be presented to Congress in January.

What is believed to be a record crowd of patrons is served at the Kiwanis Club's annual Chili Day; the 13th annual event is staged at Schneider's on Good Hope Street.

75 years ago: Oct. 29, 1933

The 25th anniversary of the founding of the Nazarene Church is observed by the local congregation of the denomination at South Park Avenue and Merriwether Street; pastor of the church is the Rev. J.E. Smith.

Herbert H. Ranney, 78, a native of Cape Girardeau County and a member of a prominent pioneer family, dies at his home in Commerce, Mo.; Ranney was born on Spring Farm, seven miles southwest of Cape Girardeau, on Nov. 14, 1855, the son of William C. Ranney, the first judge of the Common Pleas Court in Cape Girardeau.

100 years ago: Oct. 29, 1908

A number of friends assembled yesterday at the home of Mrs. C.C. Reynolds on North Main Street to celebrate her 100th birthday; the entire group was photographed, and the dear old lady and her two daughters made another picture.

Norvell Anderson and Charles Wylie come to Cape Girardeau from Commerce, Mo., and then go down to Sikeston, Mo., to attend a Democratic rally.
