25 years ago: Oct. 28, 1983

U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson of Cape Girardeau, citing the need to protect American citizens and evidence of an impending Russian-Cuban military buildup on Grenada, expresses support for President Ronald Reagan's decision to invade the island.

Cape Girardeau Central Junior High football coach Jim Allen was honored at a special halftime ceremony yesterday during the Tigers' game against Paducah, Ky.; Allen has spent 36 years coaching at various levels in the Central school system.

50 years ago: Oct. 28, 1958

Cape Boating Co., back in completely new quarters at 10 N. Sprigg St., announces its grand opening Friday and Saturday; the store's stock was destroyed and the building badly damaged in a fire May 27.

Hula hoops whirl in colorful profusion, and the variety of gyrations is astounding in the preliminaries of competition at the Arena Building under sponsorship of the Coffee Drinkers Friendship Club.

75 years ago: Oct. 28, 1933

If a modest expense fund can be raised, Billy Sunday has agreed to come to Cape Girardeau for a short campaign Dec. 5-17; the plan is to have Sunday preach each evening in State College auditorium.

A small army of 168 young men, from seven counties, including Cape Girardeau, is mobilized at the National Guard Armory to be sent to camp for six months work for the government as members of the Civilian Conservation Corps; the recruits will spend the night here in Frisco reclining seat cars, which will be attached to the Hoxie line train tomorrow and taken to Poplar Bluff, Mo.; from there, they will transfer to the Missouri Pacific and go to Arkansas.

100 years ago: Oct. 28, 1908

Nora Naeter and Annette Pangborn give their first joint public recital in the evening at the Normal School auditorium; while Naeter is a well-known pianist in Cape Girardeau, Pangborn just recently came to the Normal to study voice culture.

Moxie Manuel and his wife from Pascola, Mo., were in Cape Girardeau on Monday shopping; he is one of Pemiscot County's distinguished citizens, having made good as a pitcher with the Chicago White Sox this year.
