Lloyd Bentsen was in Cape Girardeau yesterday to campaign for the vice presidency on the Democratic ticket; speaking to about 500 workers and guests at the Thorngate plant, Bentsen charged that Republicans are trying to distort the record of Gov. Michael Dukakis in an effort to avoid the real issues facing middle-income Americans.

Cherry Hill at Capaha Park has something new: a modular play unit and a nearby swing set have replaced older playground equipment in the area near the band shell; the Noon Optimist Club and the city split the cost of the project.

Adm. Claude V. Ricketts, vice chief of naval operations, arrives at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport in the afternoon, accompanied by his wife; he inspects personnel at the Naval Reserve training center and in the evening speaks to the Navy League at the Holiday Inn.

State College Homecoming activities begin in the evening, as students disguised as Indians engage in a mock shotgun battle with others dressed as Kirksville bulldogs; shotgun blasts, using blank shells, summon students to a pep rally in front of Academic Hall.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- A $75,000 bond issue to build a state tuberculosis sanitarium here is 25 votes short of the necessary two-thirds majority; supporters of the hospital movement, however, refuse to concede defeat; a few small precincts still may not have been heard from.

Mrs. Emilie Koerber, who lives on Perryville Road, is recuperating from injuries received Sunday when a wardrobe toppled over on her; a stove broke the force of the fall and saved her from more serious injuries than three rib fractures on the left side.

1913

A stove in Siebert's Selz Royal Blue shoe store on Main Street explodes in the morning; the lads from the Crescent Lunch Room next door, summoned by S.P. Siebert, stamp out the blaze; no real damage is done, besides the demolition of the stove and the smoke and soot that fills the store.

Robert Hopper of Jackson has sold his livery stable outfit to Gockel & Morton and has discontinued business; this leaves Gockel & Morton in full possession of the livery business in Jackson.
