Melvin Gateley will ascend to the presidency of the Missouri State Teachers Association next week at the body's fall meeting in Kansas City; the L.J. Schultz School principal will guide an organization with 32,000 members.

One of Missouri's best-known artists and a former guest artist at the Southeast Missourian Art Exhibition, Siegfried G. Reinhardt, 59, died yesterday in Kirkwood, Mo.

50 years ago: Oct. 25, 1959

Members of the Neelys Mission at Neelys Landing hold a full day of activities as they dedicate their church building; remodeling, heating installations, painting, etc., have changed the appearance of the building completely, which is the former Sheppard School house.

In the morning, St. Andrew Lutheran Church conducts a "church door ceremony" as part of Reformation Day ceremonies.

75 years ago: Oct. 25, 1934

The exterior of the two-story brick building at 46 N. Main St., occupied by the Missouri Brokerage Co., is being painted yellow and trimmed in white; remodeling work on the interior also has been done; J.W. Gerhardt, local contractor, has charge of the work.

Basketball drills are being held at the State College for players not participating in football; Freddie Masteller, Rolin Jones and Joe and Gene McDonald, are the lettermen working out frequently; others practicing are Harold Rudert, Haskell Brown, Herb Lawrence, Dago Keltner and Loyd McDowell.

100 years ago: Oct. 25, 1909

Everything is prepared for Cape Girardeau's reception tomorrow of President William Howard Taft; as visitors will be coming in all night on trains, several places have arranged to stay open to offer a bed for travelers; the First Christian Church will keep open house all night long, as will the Elks Club house and the armory building; trolley cars will operate through the night.

Mr. and Mrs. George Houck came up from Bloomfield, Mo., yesterday and went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Houck for a visit; they came up to see the president.
