In an effort to promote Halloween safety, both hospitals here say they are discontinuing the X-raying of Halloween treats so parents will check their children's candy more carefully; hospitals X-rayed treats the past five years.

Meeting with the Jackson City Council last night, Jerry L. Schwab of Hoche and Barklage, auditors of Cape Girardeau, said the city's finances seem to be in excellent order; Schwab said he couldn't make recommendations to improve the city's record systems, but added a cash register would be handy, in saving work for the city collector.

A countywide crusade to immunize everyone in the county against poliomyelitis using the Sabin oral vaccine was launched last night by members of the Cape County Medical Association and civic leaders; four officials answered questions from the audience estimated at 150 people; the first "feeding" of the vaccine in oral sugar cubes will be Nov. 24.

Harry L. Coffman begins his new duties as temporary secretary of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, succeeding Don Foster.

The Bellevue Apartment building is being outfitted with six new concrete porches, to replace wooden ones; they are being constructed on the front of the apartment house, along with concrete steps; the new porches will be screened in.

1913

Jackson pedestrians are warned to be careful when traveling over First South Street; that part that lies between the old Turner hall and Goodwin & Jean poultry plant is a shoe-sticking mire; it's a pity that work on this street couldn't have been done sooner, before the bad weather set in.

The dance hall at the fairgrounds has closed for the season; A.K. Bohannon, who has charge of the hall during the warm months, is to be complimented for the orderly place he ran.
