Missouri Treasurer Mel Carnahan is in Cape Girardeau to attend the Fall Harvest and Auction of the Cape Girardeau County Democratic Committee at the Ramada Inn; Carnahan takes the opportunity to discuss his differences with Gov. Kit Bond over the handling of the state's financial situation.

Preliminary study and design work in the Cape Girardeau urban redevelopment program is expected to begin next week following the signing of a contract between the Cape Girardeau Redevelopment Corporation and the design and engineering firm of Booker Associates Inc. of Sikeston, Mo.

50 years ago: Oct. 24, 1956

The two top Western Division professional basketball teams, last year's champions, the Fort Wayne Pistons, and this year's favorites, the St. Louis Hawks, will conclude the exhibition season at the Jackson High School gymnasium this evening.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- One Perryville city bond issue proposal was approved at a special election yesterday and another was defeated in heavy voting; approved was a proposal to provide funds for extension and improvements of the waterworks system; failing was a plan to issue bonds to build a swimming pool.

75 years ago: Oct. 24, 1931

Black school teachers of Southeast Missouri close their annual convention in Cape Girardeau at the John S. Cobb School; the 70 delegates attending vote to return to this city for their 1932 meeting, to be held simultaneously with the annual meeting of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association.

Edward G. Rolwing, 57, former Charleston, Mo., banker, dies at his home in St. Louis; Rolwing, who moved with his family to St. Louis 15 years ago, was president of the North American Co. of St. Louis at the time of his death, the company being a holding organization for insurance firms.

100 years ago: Oct. 24, 1906

At 8:30 a.m., a special train over the Cape Girardeau & Chester Railroad takes about 400 delegates to the Baptist convention, meeting in Cape Girardeau, to Jackson and then down the Iron Mountain road two miles from the county seat to the spot where the first Baptist church west of the Mississippi River was established in 1806.

M.E. Leming, president of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club, receives a letter from the president of a wagon wheel factory in Ohio, who is considering establishing a plant here.
