Mississippi River from St. Louis to Cape Girardeau is forecast to drop next month to levels not seen since record low-water conditions in December 1989; meanwhile, as river continues to fall, representatives of river industry, Coast Guard and Corps of Engineers are scheduled to meet in St. Louis next week to prepare plans for keeping river open to commerce.

Over 250 students from 11 high schools represent 50 countries at Mock United Nations meeting held on Southeast Missouri State University campus; students debate international issues pertaining to environment, military spending, population, and chemical and biological weapons.

25 years ago: Oct. 24, 1976

Gordonville - The Rev. Clarence Rittman, who served as missionary in India for 42 years, speaks at Lutheran Laymen's League Fall Rally at Zion Lutheran Church, Highway 25 South at Gordonville; following program, ladies organization of Zion Church serves turkey and dressing dinner.

The Venerable Charles F. Rehkopf, retired archdeacon of Diocese of Missouri, is guest preacher at morning service at Christ Episcopal Church; Rehkopf, who resides in St. Louis, is second guest speaker to be invited to Cape Girardeau to help Christ Church celebrate its centennial.

50 years ago: Oct. 24, 1951

Two members of Municipal Airport Board fly to Jefferson City to make personal request to governor's flood relief committee for final allotment of $3,000 to complete flood-caused repair program at city airfield; Rush H. Limbaugh Jr. and William H. Wescoat Jr. are flown by John Godwin of Cape Central Airways.

Mrs. Winifred Gross of Cape Girardeau learns in telegram from Department of Defense that her son, Pvt. George M. Gross, 22, was wounded in action in Korea on Oct. 18; as usual, telegram gives no details of wounding; Gross is in unnamed hospital; he has been in Korea since May, engaged in front line communications work with 24th Infantry Division.

75 years ago: Oct. 24, 1926

Despite inclement weather, four meetings in Cape Girardeau County and vicinity held in opposition to Proposition No. 4, which hopes to overturn prohibition laws, are well attended; Billy Sunday Club of Cape Girardeau conducts two meetings, one at Oak Ridge and other at Advance; committees from local organization against No. 4 conduct meetings at Egypt Mills and Millersville.

Tim Daugherty, star center on Teachers College basketball team for five years and mentioned as all-state selection, has signed to play professional basketball with Lions of Lorain, Ohio; Daugherty, whose home is at Fruitland, will report to Lions early in November and will play center position.
