Influenza, or some other form of illness, lays claim to one out of every five pupils enrolled in the schools of Cape Girardeau, but there is little evidence of any great effect on workers in business and industry; 1,004 children are absent from classes.

H.O. Grauel of Cape Girardeau, head of the English department of State College, has been given the rank of Knight Commander of the Court of Honour by the Supreme Council of Scottish Rite Masonry, southern division.

75 years ago: Oct. 23, 1932

Members of Christ Episcopal Church observe the first anniversary of the reopening of the church building at Themis and North Fountain streets following its complete remodeling; guest speaker is the Rev. Frederick F. Johnson of St. Louis, bishop of the Missouri diocese.

A county-wide rally of Evangelical Sunday schools and young people of the Evangelical Church is held at the Evangelical Church at Jackson; guest speaker is the Rev. Harold Pflug of Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis.

100 years ago: Oct. 23, 1907

The Cape Girardeau Commercial Club has received a letter from a Chicago man who desires to establish a furniture factory in Cape Girardeau; it would cost $75,000 to build and equip the factory, and residents would be expected to take $30,000 worth of preferred stock to help finance the construction.

Broadway residents are rejoicing over the passing of a notorious saloon; William Seehausen has acquired sole ownership of the saloon near the corner of Frederick Street.
