A pathologist and an educator will be honored as the 45th and 46th recipients of the Alumni Merit Award at Southeast Missouri State University later this month; this year's citations will go to Dr. Claude K. Leeper and Dr. Kenneth L. Moll.

Burglars break into C.P. McGinty Jewelers Inc., 5 West Park Village, early in the morning by shattering the front door; once inside, they smash the tops of some display cases and make off with what police describe as a "considerable amount" of jewelry.

50 years ago: Oct. 20, 1956

The Missourian Art Exhibition committee announces that Paul J. Penczner of Memphis, Tenn., has been selected as the guest artist for the 1956 show.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- At its annual meeting at the University of Missouri Friday, Rush H. Limbaugh of Cape Girardeau was elected president of the Historical Society of Missouri.

75 years ago: Oct. 20, 1931

The Missouri deer season will open Thursday, and a number of Cape Girardeau and county nimrods will try their skill at this kind of hunting; the brief season will come to a close Saturday, and a hunter is allowed but one deer; there is said to be a comparatively large number of deer in Southeast Missouri, especially west of Cape Girardeau and near the Sam A. Baker Park district.

Street lights in Cape Girardeau will be turned off for one minute tomorrow at 9 p.m. in respect to the memory of Thomas A. Edison, who died Sunday.

100 years ago: Oct. 20, 1906

A dance was given last evening at the Elks' hall in honor of Margaret Lansden of Cairo, Ill., who has been visiting Rebecca Houck for two weeks; nine couples attended: Henry Coerver and Miss Lansden; B.C. Hardesty and Mary Kochtitzky, Burette Oliver and Marie Weber, Ed Drum and E. Sherwood Morris, Frank Kimmel and Hazel Harrison, Lee Albert and Miss Houck, Dr. Gregory Wilson and Emma Wilson, Harry Leuer and Helen Albert and Dr. T.P. Fristoe and Clara Albert.

Charles Mefford, the painter and artist of Mill Town, who has been ill for several weeks, is up and around again.
