1987

Missouri first lady Janet Ashcroft, addressing a regional gerontology conference at Southeast Missouri State University yesterday, urged the health care professionals to expand upon a lead role Missouri has taken in disseminating information about Alzheimer's disease and other problems of the elderly.

After 14 months of effort, funds are now in place from property owners to begin a construction project along Cape LaCroix Creek south of Bloomfield Road that could reduce west end flooding by 20 to 30 percent; the project involves widening and straightening the creek from the bridge at Bloomfield Road south to the river.

1962

Two plaques marking Missouri's first three concrete-paved streets, laid in Cape Girardeau in 1912, are dedicated in the morning in Courthouse Park.

Operations of International Shoe Co.'s No. 2 plant in Cape Girardeau are shut down and those in the No. 1 plant are curtailed by a walkout of employees that union officials call illegal; an estimated 350 of the 800 employees take part in the work stoppage.

1937

The amount needed to assure the location of a new factory in Cape Girardeau stands at $4,929, as the campaign continues with personal solicitations and a "Buy-a-Brick" campaign.

Elmo Sebastian announces he has purchased the Ritz Cafe, 900 Broadway, from H.B. Couchman and is now in full charge of the business; he plans to maintain his insurance office, along with the new operation.

1912

Herman Bock sustains a broken arm early in the morning while cranking his automobile to drive to his place of business at the City Steam Laundry; the crank slips and flies around with much force, striking his right arm and fracturing it in two places.

Repairs are almost complete on the home of George W. McLain, which was burned some time ago; the family will be able to move back into it in a few days.
