OAKLAND, Calif. -- Aftershocks rumble as crews search for motorists under an elevated highway collapsed by an earthquake that jarred Northern California yesterday, killing more than 270 people and injuring hundreds more; the quake, 6.9 on the Richter scale, collapsed buildings across nearly 100 miles, as well as a section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and two spans in the Santa Cruz area.
Dr. Leslie H. Cochran, provost of Southeast Missouri State University, confirms reports that he is a candidate for the university presidency; Cochran has been provost since 1980.
Layman's Day is observed at Centenary Methodist Church, with Dr. Mark Scully, State College president, as lay speaker during the morning worship service.
New pastors at the Church of the Foursquare Gospel are the Rev. and Mrs. Jerry Scarbrough, both of whom were ordained as ministers at the Life Bible College in Los Angeles, California, after they were married; they moved to Cape Girardeau two weeks ago with their two sons from Easton, Colorado.
Final arrangements have been made for the 64th annual convention of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association, to be held tomorrow and Friday at the Teachers College; approximately 2,000 teachers are expected to attend from throughout the district.
Officials and employees of Walther Furniture Co., 502 Broadway, look back over 75 years of progress as they inaugurate the celebration of the firm's diamond jubilee; the firm, one of the oldest in Cape Girardeau, was established in 1864 by August Walther, grandfather of the men who now direct the institution.
Marguerite Oliver is home; the young lady, whose trip to Europe turned into a harried jaunt through Italy, Switzerland, France and England, arrives here with her parents, coming by way of an Illinois railroad to Illmo and then by automobile to Cape Girardeau.
The Rees Lee, one of the big boats of the Lee line, is thrown into the bank at the levee front in the morning with such force as to toss freight around the decks and cause a great deal of interest among a few hundred people on the waterfront, who had gather to watch the boat land; it is suspected the boat is being guided by a replacement pilot, the more experienced pilots of the Lee line being on strike.
