25 years ago: Oct. 18, 1983

An Army Corps of Engineers plan to dredge a slackwater harbor on the Mississippi River to serve the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority looks promising and could be funded the fiscal year beginning Nov. 1, a corps official told a public hearing at Scott City last night.

A request for a liquor-by-the-drink license for a planned service station and food and beverage business is drawing opposition from members of the First Baptist Church because of its location just across Broadway from the church.

50 years ago: Oct. 18, 1958

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Commissioners appointed to assess benefits and damages in a condemnation suit brought to circuit court here have assessed damages of $112,829 to a farm through which the new Interstate Highway No. 6 will pass; the sum was awarded to Mr. and Mrs. J.E. LaVelle of New Madrid, who own 296 acres in the northeast corner of the county.

Mrs. Iska Carmack, 71, member of a prominent early day Cape Girardeau family, dies at her home, Rodney Acres; she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Whitelaw, and a sister of Barrett Whitelaw.

75 years ago: Oct. 18, 1933

The 60th anniversary of the State Teachers College is observed at the chapel hour with fitting ceremonies, the program beginning with the entry of members of the faculty in cap and gown; Robert L. Ward of Caruthersville, class of 1902, is the chief speaker.

U.S. 61 in this district will be further beautified this fall by the planting of hundreds of elm trees along its right of way.

100 years ago: Oct. 18, 1908

The Rev. E. Pruente, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau, was the main celebrant at the blessing services at the dedication of a practically new Catholic church, St. Denis, at Benton, Mo., on Wednesday.

In a baseball game so full of errors that it is ridiculously amusing, the St. Louis Browns toy with the Cape Girardeau Capahas to the tune of 11-5; the Browns, led by that ponderous pitcher, Rube Waddell, give every fan present his money's worth; as advertised, Moxie Manuel of the Chicago White Sox pitches for the Caps but is rather disappointing.
