25 years ago: Oct. 17, 1986

Although orders are supposedly coming from the federal government to shut down services until Congress passes a budget or some sort of stopgap measure, spokesmen of local federal offices say they haven't received shutdown orders.

The Southeast Missourian will sponsor the second in a series of three 8th District debates between Rep. Bill Emerson and his Democratic challenger, Wayne Cryts, Wednesday night; the debate will be held at Concord Theatre.

50 years ago: Oct. 17, 1961

A monument at Trail of Tears State Park over the grave of the Cherokee "princess," Otahki, will be erected by the Rotary Club under a proposal adopted yesterday; the club agreed to underwrite the cost of the pagoda.

By an ordinance passed last night by the City Council, responsibility for emergency services in the event of enemy attack was placed on the city administration, with the mayor given direct charge of operations.

75 years ago: Oct. 17, 1936

Giving his only address in Southeast Missouri during the current political campaign, Branch Rickey, vice president of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, discusses national and state issues at a Republican rally at Houck Field House in the evening.

A WPA project to employ five women in school cafeterias is approved; this project will be similar to one carried on last year, under the free lunch for needy children; women assigned to the project are Mrs. Robert Vangilder at May Greene School, Mrs. Fred Rawlins at Franklin, Mrs. Katherine Walters at Central, Mrs. Marie Parker at Broadway and Mrs. Frances Scott at Washington.

100 years ago: Oct. 17, 1911

The city treasurer reported at the City Council meeting last night that there is sufficient funds on hand to build the addition to the city jail; the council, in turn, approved the ordinance for the addition; Pape Brothers are the contractors.

The "white way" for Cape Girardeau is now assured; a large gathering of business men and property owners last night voiced overwhelming support for a lighting system on Main Street, Broadway and Good Hope Street.
