The Rev. A.B. Cooper, a man who was involved in creating a Baptist Student Union at Southeast Missouri State University nearly 50 years ago, was posthumously honored yesterday when the A.B. Cooper Conference Room was dedicated at the center; speaker was Rep. Betty Hearnes of Charleston, Mo., a daughter of Cooper.

A benefit concert to help pay for a recently installed pipe organ at St. Mark Lutheran Church, featuring Dr. Gary and Mary Miller, is held in the afternoon at the church.

1963

The removal of 223 shade trees, mostly dead and dying, from Cape Girardeau parkways within the last week and a half is reported by commissioner of Public Works John Hayden; in addition, the city Park Department removed 26 old and diseased trees from Courthouse and Capaha parks.

Although several Midwest states have banned all outdoor activity, including hunting, because of drought conditions and the danger of forest fires, the Missouri Conservation Commission doesn't anticipate such action; past experience in this state has shown hunters are far more valuable in the field than at home during periods of extreme fire danger.

1938

The Rev. H.C. Croslin of Carrier Mills, Ill., who has accepted a call to become pastor of Red Star Baptist Church, has pastored churches in Illinois a number of years, including Granite City and Mounds, Ill.; he plans to be here for services next Sunday.

Because of construction work, Grace Methodist Sunday school and church services are held in the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce building and Common Pleas Courthouse.

1913

A magnificent granite and marble mausoleum will be built in Lorimier Cemetery within the next 60 days to contain the remains of the late Harlan P. Peironnet, who now lies buried in the family lot in that cemetery.

The work of paving Good Hope Street is delayed for several hours in the morning, when the workers run out of cement; most all the concrete has been laid on the block between Frederick and Middle streets.
