A move to fill the office of judge of the probate court made vacant by the death of Judge James T. McDonald is started by both the Democratic and Republican committees; the Democrats have ordered the name of Osler Statler, a lawyer of Jackson, to appear on the ballot, while the Republicans will meet Friday to pick a candidate.

The Cape Girardeau City Council hasn't definitely decided whether it will repeal the 1-cent gasoline tax ordinance or submit it to voters for ratification; the tax has been suspended by the filing of protest petitions by local oil officials.

100 years ago: Oct. 14, 1911

A mighty good game of football was played yesterday at the fairgrounds between the Normal training school and the boys from Lorimier School; the training school lads were too swift for the public school athletes, however, and beat them 5-0.

Oscar Mayer returns to his home in Mound City, Ill., after visiting his brother, Charles Mayer, of Cape Girardeau for the past few days.
