25 years ago: Oct. 14, 1984

The Rev. Roy Jones has begun his work at First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau as minister of education and outreach; Jones, who completed his theological training at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., has 20 years of experience in pastoral leadership.

The Rev. Douglas Sparks has been appointed associate pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church; Sparks, a native of St. Louis, was ordained a priest June 2.

50 years ago: Oct. 14, 1959

Wayne Lohman, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wib Lohman of Jackson, a junior in Jackson High School, has been selected one of 10 members of the Junior Red Cross Advisory Council for the 16-state Midwestern Area.

Mayor Walter H. Ford and Park Commissioner J.W. McBride urge the people of Cape Girardeau to join in a comprehensive tree-planting program in the city's parkways; for planting, they recommend pin oak, ash, sweet gum, tulip poplar, hard maple, little leaf linden, hackberry and varieties of Norway maple.

75 years ago: Oct. 14, 1934

The Rev. Blount F. Davidson, pastor of the Baptist Church at California, Mo., and formerly pastor at Chaffee, Mo., preaches at both services at First Baptist Church here; the church's new pastor, Dr. H.H. McGinty, won't arrive from Lawrenceburg, Ky., until Oct. 22.

An application for a pro forma decree of incorporation was granted in Common Pleas Court on Friday to the Hillcrest Golf Club, an organization that proposes to construct a golf course on U.S. 61 between Cape Girardeau and Jackson; the application names M.E. Lesem as president, E.L. McClintock as secretary and Louis Hecht as treasurer.

100 years ago: Oct. 14, 1909

Louis Ische, for nearly 15 years a conspicuous figure at the Bee Store, and for the past few years manager there, has bought the store's stock of goods; he will continue to do business at the same location, but it will be an entirely different store when he announces his formal opening.

L.B. Houck returns from St. Louis in the evening for a few days' visit at his home here before returning to Shelby County.
